Raj Rajkumar is a Director of Symphony Asia Holdings Pte. Ltd., the advisor to Symphony International Holdings Limited, a listed strategic investment company focused on long-term direct investments in the Asia Pacific region. The Symphony team, formed in 1981, is one of the oldest Private Equity investment teams in Asia and its members have significant expertise and experience investing in the healthcare, hospitality, and branded real estate/lifestyle sectors across different markets in Asia.
Raj is a director on the boards of some of Symphony’s portfolio companies and he is a Council Member of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs, Singapore’s oldest think tank. He also serves on the board of the charity Food From The Heart.
As a member of the Ashoka Support Network, Raj advises social entrepreneurs, especially those applying technology and innovation to create positive social change. Raj is an active member of the Singapore Venture Capital & Private Equity Association and served as its Vice Chairman from 2009 until 2013.
Prior to joining the Symphony team in 1999, Raj was based in Hong Kong as an executive in GE’s Corporate Initiatives Group. Before that, Raj spent four years advising Fortune 500 companies, in the healthcare, telecommunications, and financial services sectors, while working as a management consultant with Symmetrix Inc., based in Boston. He started his career in 1985 as a design engineer with Mitsubishi Electric Corporation in Japan, before moving to the United States in 1988 to set up Mitsubishi’s first overseas semiconductor design and fabrication center.
Raj is an alumnus of the University of Kerala (B.Sc., Electrical Engineering ’83), Virginia Tech (M.S.E.E. ’85), and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (MBA ’93).
